Abstract

Puns are a way of reproducing culture of specific topics humorously. Wordplay like puns help to define relationships with those who understand versus those who do not understand the joke. Because of the insider's knowledge of the background information required to deconstruct the pun and relate it to the truthful or actual meaning of the topic they are able to understand the humor. Upon understanding and potentially explaining the meaning of the pun, the audience may participate in shared knowledge of hidden meanings and be enculturated and take part in the subculture.
